Governor Requests Mandate Revocation for Review

Governor Rubén Rocha Moya has urged the Electoral Institute of Sinaloa to reconsider a mandate revocation process denied by the body. He emphasizes that the populace should decide on elected officials' continuance, reflecting democratic principles.

Governor Requests Mandate Revocation for Review

The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, requested the Electoral Institute of the State of Sinaloa to submit himself to a mandate revocation process, after this agency rejected a citizen's petition in the same sense. The governor expressed his support for this measure, based on the principles of the Fourth Transformation that promote the people's participation in decision-making regarding the tenure of a ruler, as proposed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In a statement, Rocha Moya asserted that one of the pillars of democracy is that the people exercise their sovereignty through universal, free, secret, and direct voting, especially in the election or removal of those holding public office. Therefore, he showed his willingness to submit to the mandate revocation process requested by Sinaloa residents, highlighting that he would have no objections to this process being initiated.

The governor also expressed his desire for this figure to have been created in previous administrations and stated his willingness to be evaluated through popular vote. He lamented that this mechanism was not available in past governments and reiterated his democratic conviction that the people should have the right to evaluate their representatives.

In contrast, the Electoral Institute of Sinaloa rejected the mandate revocation against Rubén Rocha Moya, indicating that the request submitted is not admissible. The electoral body explained that, according to Article 14 of the Constitution and the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, the law cannot have retroactive effects that harm a person.

The IEES emphasized that the revocation request cannot be accepted because the Revocation of Mandate Law was enacted after Rubén Rocha Moya assumed the position of governor. The petition to remove him was presented by citizens, who mentioned the ungovernability in Sinaloa due to violence driven by organized crime groups.
